Adaptions By Adrian

Resource Type: Website

Service Type: Adaptive Skills, Other Community, Home Adaptations/Tools

Adaptations By Adrian Since 1993 Formerly known as Adrian's Closet. We have been customizing individually made adaptive clothing for special needs. We strive to ease dressing challenges, of those working within physical limits, to help make daily lives more convenient and easier. Why? Some wheelchair users have dressing challenges, such as uncooperative hands or legs, stiffness, or needing help adjusting clothes while toileting. Circulation problems create cold, swelling feet. A constant seated position creates pressure problems, sensitivity to seams, and the inability to wear store clothing. Come in and see us, as we try to solve these challenges! We're happy to answer questions. You can call us for information. Sorry, we do not take orders over the phone.

CASP Health Insurance Appeals Guide

Health insurance played almost no role in the treatment of autism before the turn of the century. Although autism was (and still is) a health condition diagnosed by a physician or psychologist pursuant to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the health insurance industry left to other systems the financial burden of autism treatment. All of that changed with the enactment of autism insurance mandate laws throughout the first two decades of the 21st century. States mandated that health insurers bear the costs of evidence-based autism treatment for an individual properly diagnosed by a physician or psychologist. This autism insurance reform movement reshaped the entire landscape of autism treatment, in particular Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), by framing the funding of treatment in terms of medical necessity. Autism service providers learned a new language, created new “insurance manager” positions within their businesses, and embraced a whole new way of thinking about funding for autism services. In this environment, the importance of understanding and pursuing appeals of denied claims has never been greater. A successfully appealed claim can make the difference between ongoing treatment for an individual with autism and unreached potential due to an inability to afford treatment. With a keen understanding of the importance of insurance appeals to families and providers, The Council of Autism Service Providers releases this Guide to set forth clear information that consumers and treating providers need to know when appealing denials of autism services. This Guide was written by leading health insurance experts to help educate individuals about their appeal rights and explain the steps in the appeals process. As part of the efforts to promote health equity, federal and state regulations have been adopted to promote due process for patients who have been denied care because an insurer will not authorize medically necessary coverage or has otherwise made adverse benefit determinations. Unfortunately, the goals of the insurance appeals process are undermined when patients and their treating providers are not aware of their appeal rights and how to best leverage the internal and external appeals systems to try to get medically necessary care covered. Even when patients and providers understand their appeal rights, health plans may still uphold their denial of care. In addition to this Guide, CASP offers training that further providers’ understanding of the appeals process when there is a denial of care for autism. More information is available on the at www.casproviders.org. A special thanks to The Kennedy Forum, Denials Management and Schooner Strategies for helping develop this Guide. If you would like to file a parity complaint, please go to www.parityregistry.org. Please also see CASP’s other resources for providers, funders, and families, which include the CASP ASD Practice Guidelines for Healthcare Funders and Managers, and the CASP Practice Parameters for Telehealth Implementation of Applied Behavior Analysis.

I see patients with mitochondrial and lysosomal storage diseases, developmental delay, intellectual disability, chromosomal disorders, congenital defects, short stature, failure to thrive, and adult genetic disorders. I love the application of rapidly growing genetic knowledge to treat patients with a variety of medical problems that involve a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors, particularly since the Human Genome Project. I find it fascinating to use the massive power of sequencing technology and artificial intelligence/machine learning to predict phenotypes from genotypes with increasing clinical relevance to human health. In my spare time, I like to hike and play sports with my wife and teenage sons, play piano, and learn famous Russian poetry of the 19th century. I see patients in person and through telehealth.

Service Type: Applied Behavior Analysis

ABA Practice Guidelines (Version 3.0) The purpose of these practice guidelines is to inform decision making regarding the use of ABA as a medically necessary, efficacious, and cost-effective treatment to develop, maintain, or restore, to the maximum practicable extent, the functioning of individuals with ASD. These practice guidelines are based on the best available scientific evidence and expert clinical opinion regarding the use of ABA as a behavioral health treatment for people diagnosed with ASD. The guidelines are intended to provide a concise, user-friendly introduction to the delivery of ABA services for ASD and to reflect consensus standards for the effective practice of these services. They are written for healthcare funders, agents of government health programs and private health insurance plans, regulatory bodies, consumers, and ABA practitioners and employers. These practice guidelines provide information about standards of care in ABA that should be used in planning, implementing, and evaluating assessment and treatment services. As a behavioral health treatment, ABA includes many distinctive clinical and delivery components. It is important for all stakeholders, including those receiving and providing services, coordinating care, administering funding, or building provider networks, to understand the essential elements of ABA.

May Institute

Service Type: Specialized School

Established in 1992, the May Center School for Brain Injury and Neurobehavioral Disorders is one of only a few pediatric programs in the United States focusing on both education and rehabilitation of children and adolescents with neurobehavioral, genetic, and related disorders. This nationally recognized school provides exceptional services to children, adolescents, and young adults, ages 5-22, with a broad range of neurobehavioral challenges. These include brain injury, genetic or chromosomal disorders, seizure disorders, mood disorders, and intellectual and neurodevelopmental disorders. We provide full-day, year-round educational, behavioral, medical, and rehabilitative services, and use established treatment and educational methods based on the latest instructional, clinical, and applied behavior analytic research. School services may be combined with our community-based residential program at one of several homes either on-campus or in nearby neighborhoods. Children and adolescents with neurobehavioral disorders and related challenges need a "home away from home" where they can belong, and an environment that supports skill development and rehabilitation, and fosters new friendships. The May Center School is just such a place. Here, our students from around the country learn to overcome obstacles, develop critical life and communication skills, control impulsive and aggressive behaviors, and become more independent. Children with traumatic brain injury learn to walk and talk again. With the support of a highly trained and compassionate staff, students continue to learn and grow while receiving the specialized services they needed to achieve their personal best. Some of our students graduate from high school, others focus on career and vocational skills; and others return to a less restrictive environment with new life skills, a sense of pride, and hope for the future. Located in Norwood, Mass., 25 miles from Boston and less than 30 miles from Providence, R.I., the May Center School is a Massachusetts Chapter 766-approved school.

The Autism Project

The Autism Project, based in Johnston, Rhode Island, is a non-profit organization committed to improving the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities, including those diagnosed with profound autism. Our services include professional training, parent education and coaching, Social Groups, a Summer Camp, and Adult Programming designed specifically for individuals on the autism spectrum. In 2024, we supported 126 individuals with profound autism across our social programs from 5 years old to 34 years old. Our Social Groups focus on enhancing social interaction and communication skills for children, teens, and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), emotional regulation challenges, or related communication disorders. These groups are led by highly trained professionals, including speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and mental health practitioners, and are supported by educators and staff trained in best practices for working with individuals with ASD. This year, TAP introduced a new group for members using AAC devices. The group is unique since everyone, including staff must use a device. The intent is to level the field for all. Staff gained insight into what it’s like for the conversation to move on before you finish your thought. How hard it is to keep up with the conversation as you form your answer. Members of the group increased their usage of their individual device in this group, as well as other groups they participated in. Camp WANNAGOAGAIN! is another key program, offering participants the chance to engage in real-life experiences, learn new leisure skills, and form friendships in a structured and supportive environment. The camp is staffed by experienced professionals who understand the unique needs of individuals with severe and profound autism. In 22 years, no camper has been sent home! It’s not always easy, but staff knows how important it is to problem solve in real time to keep a camper safe and content. It’s camp. It’s their camp and it’s our job to bring the supports, interests and compassion to keep the camper engaged and ready to come back the next day. Our Adult Programming, known as Unity Community, is tailored for autistic adults and focuses on fostering friendships and creating memorable social experiences. Among the various groups we support, our profound autism group meets in person on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. During these sessions, participants engage in physical activities suited to their abilities, contribute to the upkeep of a community garden, and undertake tasks such as mail delivery, organizational work, and maintaining the group room. These activities are guided by the lead facilitators who ensure that the programming is both meaningful and supportive of the individuals' growth and development. TAP’s commitment to individuals with profound autism spans 30+ years. Our staff brings years of classroom experience and passion to improve the lives of all autistic people. TAP is the only organization in Rhode Island with ongoing social groups (31 weeks each year) and a summer camp (3 weeks) where all are welcomed and supported to ensure their successful participation and learning. This is our 21st year. To accomplish this, TAP uses an incredibly detailed application. Staff educates caregivers that we need to know strengths and challenges so we can build a staff to meet the individual’s needs. We do not want any surprises in the woods at camp! For some it means being in a parallel group as they familiarize themselves with the building, staff and routine. Each week spending a little more time with the group until they are ready. For some it’s a matter of weeks, for others, months. That is okay. The goal is to make the experience a comfortable and stress free for the member and their family. The goal is to have people come BACK! TAP’s Family Support Specialists are also available to coach families with evidence-based strategies, resources, and school concerns. They are all parents of individuals with autism and receive extensive training on strategies for support as well as how to be there for a caregiver across the lifetime for support, information, and encouragement. FSS team members do individualized training for caregivers across the lifetime. Our professional training department lead trainer is a master level educator with over a decade of experience teaching students with profound autism in New England and Italy.

UNSEEN (Caregiver Documentary)

Service Type: Other Community

About the Documentary Unseen follows Jess and Ryan Ronne, a blended family with 8 children, including Lucas, who has profound disabilities requiring total care. Their situation has gotten more and more challenging as Lucas gets older and stronger. With limited resources and support, caregiving takes a toll on their physical and mental health. It’s a common story among parent caregivers: the isolation, uncertainty about the future, lack of options, and a never-ending daily to-do list means the role of caregiver overpowers nearly every other facet of life. Video diaries from diverse caregivers featured in the film illustrate this universality, while interviews with mental health and policy/legal experts provide a broader view on the societal impacts. Through the power of unfiltered, compelling human stories, Unseen cultivates compassion and tangible support for the caregivers in our communities.
