Understanding Will

I am the mother of three boys with autism. While I dislike attaching more labels to my children, my boys are Levels 1, 2 and 3. My household, to say the least, is the definition of why autism encompasses a spectrum. In addition to the autism diagnosis, my boys all have dual diagnosis with sensory processing disorder, dyslexia, anxiety, OCD, ADHD and depression. My middle son, William, presents the most "severe" and is 13 years old, non-speaking, and struggles with self injurious behavior. As a single parent, our family life is  extremely blessed but often limited in managing Will's needs.

We are forever managing a balancing act to try and not limit the experiences of my other two boys while never wanting Will to feel left out. With that, we keep things simple and lean into family time with swings, hikes, cooking and eating at home. It is very challenging, intense and beautiful  in a way that is often indescribable, and I wish others could better understand our lives. Will has a magnetic and captivating way about him and can literally steal the hearts of most people without having to say a word. He has an incredible sense of humor, gives the best hugs and is usually easy going. He is a joy, and I wouldn't trade him for the world. I just wish the world was more inclusive, open, loving and understanding for him.
